Try These Helpful Hints!

1.  When I visit a web page it doesn't show the latest data or pictures?

2.  My computer seems to be slowing down?

3.  When I try to print an Internet page the left or right side is always cut off?

How To Refresh Your Browser

When you visit an Internet site all pages that you visit are stored on your computer in your temporary Internet file folder. Then, in most situations, when you revisit that website you are not actually looking at the latest data. Instead, you are looking at the file previously stored in your temporary Internet file folder.

To view the latest files and pictures you will need to either REFRESH your browser or delete the files in your TEMPORARY INTERNET FILE folder.

To Refresh:

  • When you are on an Internet page, right click on any black space (not on an image) and select "REFRESH". This will refresh the page and cause all new pictures and data to be loaded.

If this doesn't help then delete the temporary files in your temporary Internet files folder. You might as well delete the hundreds of cookies stored on your computer as well at the same time.

To Delete Temporary Internet Files And Cookies

  • On the Desktop, right click on the Internet Explorer icon.

  • Click on Properties.

  • Depending upon your browser version:

    • Click Delete Cookies (if it is available). Select OK to delete all cookies in Temporary Internet folder.

    • Click Delete Files. A second box will appear. Put a checkmark in "delete all offline contents" checkbox and press OK

    • Click Clear History. Select OK to delete your history files.

  • If you are not using the latest version of Internet Explorer then you might not be able to delete the cookies using the above instructions. However, you can still delete all cookies by doing the following:

    • Right click on the My Computer icon on the Desktop

    • Left click on Explorer. This opens Windows Explorer

    • Click on the plus sign for My Computer

    • Click on the plus sign for the C: drive to expand it

    • Click the plus sign for the Windows folder

    • Click on the Cookies folder in the left pane to show files in the right pane

    • Highlight any folder or file in the right pane

    • In the top taskbar click on Edit

    • In the drop down menu click on Select All. All cookies will be highlighted in the right pane

    • Hold down CTL or CTRL and in the right pane click on index.dat to de-select it. Then delete all remaining files.

If all else fails:

Use Windows Explorer to find the folders that contain your COOKIES and TEMP INTERNET FILES. Then, highlight all of the files and delete them. If you are asked to make a choice between deleting or not deleting system files ALWAYS select NO to not delete system files.

How To Delete Windows Temporary Files

Temporary files are normally deleted when the program is closed, but not always.  The temporary files are created in C:\Windows\Temp directory.  Too many files will bog down your computer.  It is recommended to delete any files more than seven (7) days old on a regular basis by following these steps:

  • Right click on the My Computer icon on the Desktop.

  • Left click on Explorer. This opens Windows Explorer.

  • Click on the plus sign for My Computer.

  • Click on the plus sign for the C: drive to expand it.

  • Click the plus sign for the Windows folder.

  • Click on the Temp folder in the left pane to show files in the right pane.

  • In the top taskbar click on View.  From the drop down menu select "Details."

  • In the right windows pane, click on Date Modified at the top of the last column.  This will sort the files according to date modified.

  • On the menu bar at the top of the screen, click Edit and then click Select All.  This highlights all files in this folder.

  • Verify that you are in the C:\Windows\Temp folder.

  • While holding down CTL or CTRL on your keyboard click on every file that is less than seven (7) days old.  This de-selects those files.

  • After de-selecting files that are less than seven (7) days old, press the Delete key on the keyboard.

  • Answer Yes to any prompts about deleting files.

NOTE: If you receive a message stating that a particular file cannot be deleted, continue deleting the remaining files until as many files as possible have been deleted.

Also, if your computer is really slow it could be because you need to de-fragment the hard drive or you could have spyware, adware, or a virus on your comuter. You should check your computer once a week for spyware, adware, or viruses. Make sure you have the latest spyware, adware, or virus definitions on your computer.

Prior to checking for spyware or adware make sure you delete all cookies from your computer. Otherwise, they will be reported as spyware.

How To Print Internet Pages

Problem: Pages are cut off on the left or right margins.

Some Internet pages provide a PRINT VERSION link so that you can print the page without experiencing any problems. However, on other Internet sites, when you print Internet pages you might have to adjust the page margins.

When you are on the Internet page that you want to print and a PRINT VERSION link is not provided, follow these instructions:

  • In the upper toolbar of your browser, click on FILE.

  • In the drop down menu, click on PAGE SETUP.

  • You will see the following:

  • First, set your orientation to either portrait or landscape. The page margin settings you see in the above graphic is for printing in portrait mode. Usually these same settings will work OK in landscape.

  • If you want a clean printing of the page, don't forget to clear the Header and Footer sections or your will have unneeded information printed at the top and bottom of your printed pages.

  • Once you have the page setup the way you want it, go back to the FILE drop down menu and click on PRINT PREVIEW if it is available to you. Your page will be shown just as your printer will print it.
