All
submissions should be sent to Kay Krozely Gariglio or Nancy Coax
Malacarne. Refer to the Contact Us page for contact
information. We need pictures and written memories
from our high school classmates (10th, 11th & 12th grades), but there are some restrictions as to what we can and cannot use .....
ARTICLES We cannot use copyrighted material without the approval of the original photographer, author, or publisher. This includes old post cards, calendars, books, newspaper articles, etc. Obtaining approval is a timely process; therefore, we will probably not consider copyrighted material for use on the web site. Indeed, some of the authors and photographers are now deceased and we would have to get approval from their estate.
We have blanket approval from the Leader Times to use their photographs and articles so feel free to send them for use on the web site.
We also think your written recollections and stories about high school
(again 10th, 11th, & 12th grades) would be great for our Bits and Pieces pages.
Let us know what career path you pursued or about anything
outstanding that might have occurred in your life.
PICTURES Our vision of what the web site should look like includes high school pictures and memories. You know, candid shots of classmates while in high school: at school activities; day trips; at the Cadet; at football and basketball games; sitting around the table at one of the many restaurants; in your cars; at the drive-in theater; at dances; etc.
Since most of us have children and grandchildren a picture of your family along with what you are doing now (retired, etc.) would be nice to publish. We now have the
Family Pages and you can have as many as 25
pictures in your own Family Page layout.
If you are submitting a picture for use on the KHS1960 web site maintain the
original size which must be a minimum of 3 or 4 inches wide.
The height doesn't really matter. (Exceptions are noted
below.) You should scan the photo at any resolution of 150 or better but don't
try to increase the size of a small picture by scanning at a higher
resolution because when we get it we crop it and then set it to a
resolution of 100. It will look larger on your screen but it makes extra
work for us to resize and crop it for web site use and the final picture
might be too blurred or too grainy to use.
Maintain the original size
if it is at least 3 or 4 inches wide. If you have an 8 X 10
picture, scan it at it's original size. If you crop it you might
make it impossible for us to then resize it to fit on the page where we
need to put it. Remember, the minimum size to send should be 3 or 4
inches wide. For example, a picture that is 1.5 inches in height
and width will not display properly; when enlarged, it will look
fuzzy, grainy.
Exceptions would be older
pictures taken with old cameras that produced pictures less than 3 or 4 inches
wide. We will have to display those pictures at the original smaller size.
They become too grainy if increased in size. Mostly we receive those types
of pictures for the Memories page. Of course, if they are too small or too
grainy then we can't use them.
Do not reduce the size for sending via e-mail. It might take
longer to send but you must maintain the original size at a resolution of at
least 150.
We cannot use copyrighted photos; i.e., from newspapers, from
postcards, from Internet news sites, etc. without written approval.
If you want us to use a story and/or picture of you and your family that
was published in a local newspaper it is your responsibility to obtain written approval
from them before sending the picture to us. Don't forget to send
the approval along with your story and/or picture.
We recommend that if you are going to send pictures of people other than yourself that you get their approval to use the picture before you send it for publication on the web site. Probably a safe procedure to follow is to only send candid pictures of you and close friends; those whom you know would probably approve. This does not include pictures taken at public events where a person does not have a presumed right to privacy.
If you send a lot of pictures at one time and they are not in
conformance with these requirements then we will probably not use too many of
them. We'll pick out a couple of the best but it takes too much time to
process a lot of non-conforming pictures. Remember, all of the
work done on KHS1960.com is accomplished by volunteers.
Pet Pictures. We will not use "cute pet" pictures.
We just do not have the time to process pet pictures or the extra space
to display them on the web site.
We have used several elementary school class pictures on the site to show how some of our classmates changed over a six year period but such pictures, while interesting and nostalgic for classmates who might have attended that particular school, are not really reflective of our high school days. There were many elementary schools in the school district in the 1950s. Of course, if you have pictures of elementary school classmates at recess, on school trips, etc. that we can all relate to then by all means send them in. They provide us with a walk down memory lane.
If you aren't sure how to process your pictures, Kay Krozely Gariglio says to
send them to her via US mail and let her handle it. She is punctual
in returning photos.
Why is it necessary to establish requirements / procedure for submitting pictures?
To create pages with practical download times, there are limits to
the amount of data (size of file) they can include. The larger the size of the image file (in
bytes), the slower the download. A classmate photo that is 500 Kbytes will
download a lot slower than one at 50 Kbytes so we don't use the larger file.
Remember, some classmates live in areas that do not have hi-speed Internet
service. They must still use 56K dial-up modems and we want to ensure
they, too, have an enjoyable experience while visiting our site. Indeed,
almost 30 percent of the visitors to our site are still using Windows 98 or
Windows ME.
Any pictures that you submit via US Mail will be returned. However, if you have access to a scanner and e-mail then please consider submitting them to
Kay Krozley Gariglio via e-mail. When you scan a picture scan it at a resolution of 150
(minimum) and send it without trimming it at all.
Why do we need
submission protocol? Here is an explanation from Harry
Crytzer:
"I rely on Kay or Nancy
to filter items for the website since they represent the ad
hoc committee for all things good for KHS 1960. I
actually removed myself from that loop. Even though I own
the website and volunteered to be he webmaster I asked Nancy and Kay to accept information and
pix and then send them to me for use on the website. This
eliminates the risk of me working on pix, etc. and then
finding out later that Nancy or Kay was working on the same
project but with different pictures.
It is the only way that we can
all work on the same page together. They save me a
tremendous amount of work. The website now has 215 pages
and almost 1100 pictures on it. It takes a lot of time to
properly maintain it."
